The origins of Roquetas de Mar are shrouded in mystery. The coast was visited by Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, but the Neolithic cultures only settled temporarily on the coast of Almeria. We have to go back to the beginning of the XVIII century to find the first vestiges of lasting establishments, around 1737. Nowadays, tourism is one of the main bases of the economy of Roquetas de Mar and this sector has expanded. In 1964 Aguadulce was declared centre of National Tourist Interest. In 2005 the future is assured with an impressive population growth to the current 70,000 inhabitants - which is hoped to double in the next five years. Agriculture and tourist business is joining with real estate business, and the expectations of development in the province of Almeria and Roquetas de Mar are fabulous. This is one of the main tourist destinations in Almería. Although much of the land is dedicated to intensive greenhouse farming, the tourist industry is the strongest business in the region, taking advantage of the beautiful beaches and the sun. The municipality of Roquetas de Mar covers a stretch of coast in the south-eastern part of the province, including, among others, the towns of Aguadulce, El Parador, Las Marinas, Urbanización, and Las Salinas. The historic centre contains several monuments, such as the church or Nuestra Señora del Rosario, from the 17th century, the castle of Roquetas, and the Arab watchtower of Cerrillos. In addition, the town has clean, well-kept beaches and a wide variety of services and facilities available to the visitor. The annual temperature is around 21º C.

Almerimar is situated 40 km west of Almería and 160 km east of Málaga. It is one of the few resorts in Europe within less rainfall. Its wide, sandy beaches, the nautical sports, restaurants and hotels make for an unforgettable holiday. Almerimar is also known for its golf course and its marina with unspoiled beaches, quiet un crowded byways to Cabo de Gata and the Sierra Nevada, Yacht club, marina promenade and natural scenic beauty. It boasts wide, sandy beaches and offers bars, hotels, shopping arcades and night life. The town has a 1,000 berth marina and a yacht club. Sailing and windsurfing are possible all year round. The clear Mediterranean water makes it an excellent place for snorkeling and scuba-diving. Fishing is also popular. Almerimar is a purpose-built tourist complex centre around the working fishing harbor and the modern yacht marina which has moorings for more than 1,000 boats. The resort is flanked by two natural parks and long unspoiled beaches. The annual temperature is around 20º.

Aguadulce is situated 15 km west of Almería and 145 km east of Malaga. It is one of the few resorts in Europe where the rainfall is scarce. The sun shines for more than 320 days a year! Agua Dulce has grown from a very small fishing village to the present day as a tourist complex of hotels, apartments, restaurants and a sports marina. The naturist village of Vera is situated in a privileged situation for tourism in the east part of Almería. Praised by the ones who know it already, the naturist area of Vera has grown to an important destiny within the European naturist resorts. The service offered in the different urbanizations and along the beach is numerous and count with green zone everywhere, fountain, swimming pools and heated indoor pools, French bowl course, beach restaurant, massage room, supermarket, disco pub with Latin music, sun beds, water sport activities, volley beach and beach football. Vera is a prosperous town with great variety of shops and amazing street market. Nearby at Vera Playa there is the only Water Park in the area. Vera has a strong attraction by its local strong cuisine found in both classy restaurants and local tapas bars.

Like many other villages in south-eastern Spain, in the 1960's Mojacar had become a ghost town, since most of its active inhabitants had moved north to find work in the factories of the Barcelona region, and further afield. To attract new residents, the town's mayor gave land away to anyone who promised to build, and within a year picturesque Mojacar had become a thriving art colony. Situated in the south eastern province of Almería, Mojácar enjoys an excellent location: protected from behind by the Cabrera mountain range and overlooking the warm Mediterranean sea. This southerly location, the proximity to the Africa continent and the high surrounding ranges all contribute to keeping any cloudy fronts away, while the warm Mediterranean assures Mojácar of an exceptional subtropical climate. Temperatures are kind the year round, with an average of 21º C. Mainstream tourists and holidaymakers were also later attracted by the beauty and charm of the place and the following decades saw the development of its shoreline, with the construction of hotels and villas. Just 2 km away from Mojacar Pueblo is its beach resort. From La Marina de la Torre to Sopalmo and the Granatilla beach, Mojácar's coast is 17 kilometers of shoreline - from empty coves to bustling beaches. Marina de la Torre, in front of a golf course, is around two kilometers of white sandy coastline, removed from the urban sprawl. The mouth of the River Aguas offers an extended sandy beach which continues along the coast as La Rumina. The Descargador and Vista de los Angeles beaches offer quiet sunbathing with some installations and services. El Cantal is the most popular of all our beaches, with a large variety of installations, beach bars and the like. Similarly, the Cueva del Lobo and Ventanicas beaches are popular with visitors, although the sand here is courser: once again, these are full service beaches. Mojácar has wisely protected other beaches - including some of the most dramatic ones - from any development - such as Macenas, Cala del Peñon, Cala del Sombrerico, Bordenares, El Lance and the final cove of the municipality to the west, Cala Granatilla. Mojácar offers a rich variety of regional and international dishes to awaken and delight all her guests.
