It is one of Bulgaria’s busiest cities, so a tourist is guaranteed to find plenty to see and do.
History
Based on the artifacts found within the city, it is known that the area was inhabited ever since the Bronze and Iron ages. Thracians have also been here in times B.C. The name Burgas, however, only first appears in a written document in the year 1306 when a Byzantium poet mentioned it in a poem.
Burgas probably started as an ancient Greek town called Pirgos, which was famous for its watchtower. Pirgos later became a thriving Roman seaport. From the word Pirgos comes the present day name of Burgas.
