However you will not find there long beaches, but instead there are hundreds of small coves with snow white sand and bright blue crystal clear sea. Often fragrant pine forests descend to the very beach. Talking of beaches, we must say that outside the main urban centers and resort on the island, beaches are pretty empty and offer privacy to the visitors. This applies especially to the north of the island where there are no buildings and nature is almost untouched.
By bicycle you can easily reach all parts of the island, because its relief and terrain allow it. The highest point is Monte El Toro mountain, which is only 358 meters high. Despite its small elevation the top of the monte offers a spectacular panorama of the entire island. On Monte El Toro you will find a beautiful statue of Jesus, which protects the island and its inhabitants with, which resembles the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro. Menorca’s statue is much smaller though, but raises no less respect and reverence. Besides the peaceful provincial atmosphere in the island’s interior, the breathtaking views from the highest point and indented coastline, Menorca will also impress you with its beautiful towns. You can imagine how small these towns really are, given that the entire island is home to about 70,000 people. The largest cities are Sitadela and Mahon. South of Mahon is located the main airport of Menorca, as well as the smaller airport of San Luis. Sitadela a beautiful city with Spanish architecture, narrow streets, squares and solid walls.
Mahon is he capital of the island and has one of the finest deep water harbors in the entire Mediterranean. That explains why it has always been a prime target for navy’s and pirates over the centuries.
At present, Mahon is an elegant town with an array of places of interest, the famous port is one of them and is spread over about 2 miles, with the working port area at one end and a millionaire’s yachting marina at the other.
The ancient architecture of local cities in combination with a pleasant and unpretentious cafes in the squares make this island an ideal vacation spot. If you’re into eco-tourism and wildlife, you should head to the north of the island. Today it is almost untouched, and unlike most places in the Mediterranean there is no sign of overbuilding.
Before heading to Menorca is important to know that in 1993 the island was declared a biosphere reserve. Today this paradise is under UNESCO protection. Menorca is one of the cleanest and most peaceful islands in southern Europe.
