Located in the north-east of Italy, Veneto is the 8th largest region of the country. The landscape of Veneto is featured by four different areas: the Alpine zone, the hill zone, the lower plain and the coastal territory.
The mountainous area covers the 29% of its surface and it is composed by the Carnic Alps, the eastern Dolomites (with the well known massif of Marmolada; the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Pale di San Martino) and the Venetian Pre-alps (with its distinctive cave formations, such as the Spluga della Preta, the deepest cave in Italy).
The 57% of the region is covered by the Po Valley, consisting in a plain, broken only by some small hills such as Colli Euganei, Colli Asolani, Colli Berici and Montello, which form the hills zone of Veneto. The plain of the Po Valley is divided into the higher plain (characterized by gravel soil not very fruitful) and the lower plain (rich in water sources and cultivable terrain). The region has several rivers flowing trough: Po, Adige, Brenta, Bacchiglione, Livenza, Piave and Tagliamento. Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, belongs in its eastern shore to Veneto.
The costal territory of the Adriatic Sea is featured by the Venetian Lagoon, a smooth land with marshes, ponds and islands. The Po Delta’s area is characterized by sand bars and dunes along the coast. The internal part includes cultivable areas recently regenerated by a system of dams and canals.
